The first month is mostly paperwork that unlocks the next step. A sensible order saves weeks.
1. Somewhere to land Start with a verified rental — ideally one that accepts foreigners and does not require a Spanish guarantor. You can filter for exactly that on Nuevolista.
2. NIE and padrón Book your NIE appointment early. Once you have an address, register on the padrón (empadronamiento) at the town hall — it is needed for healthcare, schools and many procedures.
3. Bank account Open a Spanish account so you can pay rent and set up direct debits for utilities. Some banks let non-residents open an account with a passport before the NIE arrives.
4. Utilities and internet Transfer or set up electricity, water and fiber. Fiber is widely available in cities and matters if you work remotely.
